Review of “A Star is Born”

I was definitely not interested in watching a movie with Lady Gaga as the star. She is outdated and the only memory of her that sticks out to me is her 2010 meat dress. (pictured below)

I thought it would be a movie about her career and the rest of the cast was just background.

I was so wrong.

After watching “A Star is Born” I was a little obsessed with the movie and became “that friend” that was bugging everyone to watch it. My heart was being pulled every which way from the romance aspect, the second hand embarrassment from the awards scene, the self and interpersonal betrayal, and lastly the tragic ending.

In a review from Rotten Tomatoes that states, “like all the best love stories their relationship reaches out beyond the screen, and asks the audience to experience the highs and lows, as if they were these characters,” Willow Maclay describes the intensity of the film perfectly. The parking lot scene where Bradley Cooper falls head over heels for Lady Gaga’s voice and personality takes you on a high where you wish you were this deeply loved, while the Grammy Award scene makes you wish Cooper was dead as he drunkenly peed on stage as Gaga accepts her award. When Cooper actually does die by suicide at the end of the film because he is told he is not good enough for Gaga, you regret ever wishing any bad on him feel like the worst person ever. When you find out that Bradley Cooper co-wrote/directed the film and some of its music, your mind is blown even more and you cry a little.

The review by Jorge Ignacio Castillo also found on Rotten Tomatoes angered me as he claimed, “More like A Star Is Bored. Am I right? No? I’m the only one who isn’t gaga for Gaga? Fine, then.” There was no time to even feel the slightest amount of boredom throughout the entire film and Lady Gaga played her part to the fullest. Her raw vocals chilled my bones. The power of her unedited voice is shocking and inspiring as she is able to sing that way without the help of any instrumentals or background music. (parking lot scene below- song: Shallow)

Overall, this movie exceeded my expectations and I developed a new level of respect for both Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. Aside from the film, I was also ecstatic to find out that their relationship mysteriously continued after the film as they were pictured together several times and dating rumors floated.
