Final

The Family Picnic

In these difficult (and boring) times, I will attempt to add a spark of creativity to my life by creating a “horror” movie. I plan to use Adobe Rush Premier, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Premiere Pro 2020 to create a movie cover, edit footage, add music, and include end credits. I will have 3 additional actresses other than myself to play the roles of mother, child, and “monster”. There will be some kind of family struggle that leads to the child being separated from the parents and being kidnapped by a monster. Depending on the props I can gather, I’m considering the film to take place at dinner, park, or picnic. I recently viewed the movie “Us” written and produced by Jordan Peele who also wrote and produced my favorite movie “Get Out”. In my opinion, the music playlist of the film added dimension and suspense to the film that common horror film music does not create. I want to include some of these tracks in my own film to mimic the effects. I am focused on planning scenes with props, “stage” directions, and costumes, but I am considering leaving the lines up for improv. I do not want to put the pressure of memorizing lines on my fellow actresses and quite frankly, I think improv will show true creativity.

After filming and editing my movie, I think it came out more like a horror/ comedy film. I went with the picnic idea so that we were mostly outdoors to attempt to abide by the rules of today’s circumstances. It’s meant to illustrate a toxic parent to child relationship that leads to the child getting kidnapped by the “monster” during what was supposed to be an innocent picnic. The child’s behavior does not fit in with those of her parents that creates the child to parent division. The improv lines added some humor which ultimately just made it more entertaining. Also, with only a limited number of props available during these times, the monster’s costume makes the “horror” part of the film quite humourous. Despite this, I do believe the added music strengthened the suspenseful and unsettling mood to make the audience feel scared. During editing, I struggled to get the music to perfectly match up to the creeping footsteps of the monster seen beneath the car. Additionally, a lot of my effort went towards creating the cover of the film by editing, manipulating, and overlapping different photos with photoshop. I used 5 different images to create the final product; the ocean, buildings, birds, lightning, and clouds. The original photos did not have anything scary about them but meshing them together with Adobe Photoshop and adding a black and white effect (with increased contrast) created the effect I was looking for. I did end up using both Adobe Rush Premiere and Adobe Premiere Pro 2020 to put the filmed clips together, add music, and end credits. I considered using Adobe Audition to mess with the music and put additional sound effects but 1) I was not able to download the program to my computer and 2) I realized that the scenes with the music were my favorite part and I was content not distorting them. I added a blog post to my WordPress page to critique the film and give it a review. Overall, I’ve never made anything like this before and I actually had fun dressing up, playing a part, and editing the video.
